Sport conditioning

The physical demands placed on the competitive athlete vary from sport to sport. The Sport Conditioning program at Stonetown Physiotherapy & Sports Injuries Clinic is an individualized program — specific to the athlete and his or her sport. Your sport conditioning program is developed, monitored and evaluated by a comprehensive staff, including registered physiotherapists, certified strength and conditioning specialists (CSCSs), and certified kinesiologists.

In order to develop a program specific to your needs, various components of physical fitness will be assessed, including:

Functional Movement Screen

Overall physical function is evaluated. The parameters of this examination are described below, under the categories of:

  • Flexibility.
  • Upper body strength/stability.
  • Lower body strength/stability.
  • Muscular endurance.

Flexibility

Movement of the muscles and joints is evaluated in multiple planes of motion. This simulates movement that is required for optimal physical performance.

Upper Body Strength / Core Stability

The mechanics of upper body motion are evaluated, including:

  • The ability to generate power.
  • The ability to support the torso and shoulder girdle.
  • The ability to transfer force from the torso to the upper extremities.

Lower Body Strength / Core Stability

The mechanics of lower body motion are evaluated, including:

  • The ability to generate power.
  • The ability to support the lumbar spine, pelvis and hip girdle.
  • The ability to transfer force from the torso to the lower extremities.

Muscular Endurance

The ability of the trunk, upper and lower body muscle groups to tolerate prolonged activity.

Explosive / Anaerobic Power

The ability of the trunk and lower body to generate rapid power and propulsion.

Cardiovascular Fitness

The capabilities of the cardiovascular system are evaluated. This is a reflection of the heart and blood vessels’ ability to deliver oxygen to muscle tissue and remove carbon dioxide.

Speed and Agility

Speed and agility training focuses on development of sound technique and explosive force for sprinting, braking, lateral and vertical movement.

Body Mass Index

Body weight is evaluated by taking into account the athlete’s height. This test should be only used as a guideline as other factors will affect weight, including muscle mass.

Taking into account the physical demands of your sport, and your performance goals, your fitness evaluation will form the basis for a personalized strength and conditioning program.

It is our mandate to help you improve your physical health, while providing you with the skills and techniques to continue safe, independent and lifelong participation in healthy physical activity.
